As the gateway for more than 12 million immigrants between 1892 and 1954. Ellis Island holds a unique place in our Nations history. More than 90 million Americans trace their roots to Ellis Island. and 11/2 million visitors from around the world tour the island every year. Unfortunately. some parts of the island are not receiving the attention they deserve. and last month the National Trust for Historic Preservation included the south side of Ellis Island on Its annual list of the 11 most endangered historic places in the United States.
