As Justice Rehnquist noted. the flag is not simply another idea or point of view competing for recognition in the marketplace of ideas. Millions and millions of Americans regard it with almost mystical reverence. All should. In my view. it Is literally the fabric which binds us together. It is the symbol of who we are and the emblem we rally around when times get tough. A gentleman by the name of Mike Ashmond in my district was an immigrant from Iran. He knew what it was like not to live in freedom. He went to Germany first. learned of the freedoms of America. moved to America to run his business. and he loves our American flag.
