Session #105 · 1997–99

Speech #1050033494

As we have seen with the dramatic narrowing of economic inequality and income inequality that has occurred in the last 4 years. that there is still going to be large sectors of our economy. large sectors of our population. individuals and their families that are going to be left out of the benefit of that growth. That is especially true if you take the position. as I do. that we ought to put in place laws that say the United States of America is going to lead the effort to lower trade barriers. that we believe that generally speaking we are better off competing in a global economy. In that global economy with technology. with immigration. with the welfaretowork programs that are going on. people at the lower end of the wage scale are going to suffer. They are going to be under a lot of pressure. People making $5.15 an hour. $6. $7. $8. $9. $10 an hour are going to be under a great deal of pressure.
