Session #105 · 1997–99

Speech #1050016498

I thank my colleague. I came to the floor of the Senate today to try to make sure that we make a commitment. albeit a preliminary commitment. I will read the operative language. "* * * take steps to ensure that elderly and disabled legal immigrants who are unable to work. will not be left without Federal assistance essential to their wellbeing." I believe that. "It is the sense of the Senate that elderly and disabled legal immigrants who are unable to work should receive assistance essential to their wellbeing. and that the President. Congress. the States. and faithbased and other organizations should continue to work together toward that end." is in the same spirit. We are going to have to define this with concrete language and with a decision made about investment of resources.
