Session #105 · 1997–99

Speech #1050013859

Will this scandal confirm AsianAmericans fears that the system is rigged against them. discouraging them from participating in the development of public policy in a meaningful way? If so. this would be tragic for a community that is by far the fastest growing in the Nation. which is expected to comprise 7 percent of the population by 2020. and which has so many skills and experiences to offer our country. This tragedy would be compounded for those immigrants recently escaped from the yoke of authoritarianism. who might find the consequences of political activism reminiscent of the penalties experienced in their countries of origin. In conclusion. Mr. President. as we investigate the fundraising affair. let us remember the bigotry. prejudice. and discrimination faced by Asian immigrants and AsianAmericans as they struggled for acceptance in the New World. Let us recall how they overcame steep social. economic. and institutional barriers to become valuable. contributing members of society. With this in mind.
