Session #105 · 1997–99

Speech #1050006557

I am proud to submit a Senate resolution designating the month of March each year as "IrishAmerican Heritage Month." Since 1621. when the first Irish settlers arrived on our shores. Americans of Irish descent have made invaluable contributions to all aspects of American life. Between 1840 and 1910. more than 3 million Irish immigrants reached our shores and contributed Immensely to the development of our country. In fact. this year marks the 150th anniversary of the Great Famine in Ireland that led to one of the most tragic migrations in history. The potato crop failed. and hundreds of thousands fled In desperation to the New World.
