Having come to the United States for freedom from oppression. Mr. Baban was imprisoned. againthis time by U.S. authorities. A year later he was denied political asylum when the interpreter he was assigned at a hearing did not speak or understand his Kurdish dialect. As a result. the immigration judge before whom he appeared did not believe that Mr. Baban was Kurdish. It took 16 months in detention before Alan Baban was finally granted asylum on appeal.
