Session #104 · 1995–97

Speech #1040267301

I want to make the point once again that the opponents who we are hearing from this afternoon do not represent a majority of their own party. They certainly are entitled to try to kill this bill or block the bill or defeat the bill. but we have every right. those of in the majority. to try to pass this legislation. The reason I say that they do not even represent a majority of their own party is simply because every major provision in this conference report. which is itself a compromise. is the result of either the House passage of the bill which passed by 333 to 87. or the Senate immigration bill which passed by a vote of 97 to 3. So there is wide and deep bipartisan support for the provisions in this bill. and I expect to see that bipartisan support continue when the bill comes on a conference report. Mr.
