Session #104 · 1995–97

Speech #1040260056

What does it have? Zero. The question is whether we are going to legislate here in the interest of the American people. write legislation that really deals with the problem that we are facing. and it is a big problem. with regard to illegal immigration and the displacement of American workers or whether we are going to do what the lobbyists tell us to do. I urge the Members of the House to come to this floor and vote in favor of the Conyers motion to instruct and to tell whoever it is that is calling the shots behind the scenes. we want 350 wage and hour workers back in this bill. We want them to be able to augment the efforts of our other Government agencies in trying to fight illegal immigration. We want a bill that does what the advertisers and the sponsors of this bill say they are trying to do. And that is stop people who do not live in this country. who are not supposed to be in this country from taking the jobs of working Americans.
