I agree that learning English should be a priority for all persons residing in the United States. But in an Increasingly global economy. literacy in a number of languages is a clear advantage--and. in some cases. a necessity. The more literate an individual is. the better equipped he or she is to adapt to the rapid pace of economic change. Immigrants realize that learning English is essential to their own economic success. That is why English classes are running 24 hours a day in many parts of the country and thousands of people are currently on waiting lists. But that does not mean that real literacy in other languages is not also an important skill.
