In fact. more than 80 percent of all Americans support English as the official language. It is about time we acknowledged that one of the most important things we can do to help individuals succeed in America is to encourage them to learn our common language. A recent study of Asian refugees by the State of Texas shows that those individuals who attained proficiency in English earn over 20 times the annual income of those who do not speak English. Learning English will enable immigrants to do what they came here to do: achieve the American dream. We must reverse the failed policies of the 1960s and 1970s. America is a diverse Nation. however. we must bind the strength that comes from Americas diversity with our common language.
