How can this be anything but bad for the poor. when we know that In my Home State of Illinois alone. 55.800 children will be pushed below the poverty line as a result of this bill. and 1.3 million children will be similarly impacted nationwide. Please know. Mr. Speaker. that I will not join demopublicans and republicrats in this meanspirited attack. you can rest assured that I will work to continue to provide equal protection under the law for our Nations poor. our disabled. our immigrants and our children. Posturing tough on welfare mothers is viewed as good politics at least by a press corps that admires cynicism. But ending welfare as I know it is a good idea if done well.
