Session #104 · 1995–97

Speech #1040243768

You havt to find your relief through the political processes. not through the judicial processes. That is what we are about today. Fundamental fairness In terms of the Federal Government assuming its appropriate responsibility for the financial cost of the immigration decisions that it has made. There is a second issue of fairness and that is as it relates to the individual affected. These people who came here under the current immigration law did so under a set of standards and expectations that did not include that they were going to have their benefits peremptorily terminated. If this is a good idea to have in effect today. we should have done it 10 or 20 years ago. I think it Is fundamentally unfair to have these people in the country under the rules that have appliedwe are dealing. here. with legal aliens. people who pay the same taxes we do and are subject to the same responsibilities. but now. at the last moment. we are going to say you are not going to get the same benefits.
