Session #104 · 1995–97

Speech #1040204831

Mr. President. again. what seems to be so appropriate in immigration matters often has a deeper tenor when we are talking about the blind and the disabled. We all want to respond. Let me say this: We only make the sponsor pay what the sponsor is able to pay. We are back to the same Issue. This is a very singular issue. as were the amendments we voted on last night. The issue is. when you come to the United States of America as a sponsor. you are saying that the immigrant you are bringing here will not become a public charge. That is the law. If you become disabled or blind and you go to seek assistance. the law provides that if your sponsor has a lot of money. you are going to get the money from the sponsor first.
