Session #104 · 1995–97

Speech #1040203015

I think would understand that these issues have to be kept separate. Let me say in a little bit more detail. let us consider what happened. In the Judiciary Committee. on the committee side. we had a vote. It was a longdebated vote over whether or not legal and illegal immigration should be kept together. The conclusion was very clear: a majority of Republicans and a majority of Democrats in the Judiciary Committee voted to divide the issues and to keep the legal immigration debate and issues separate from the illegal immigration issues. That. I believe. is what we should also do on the floor of the Senate.
