Neither can we forget the genocide committed during the past 5 years by the Orthodox Christian Serbs against the Muslim Slavs in the former Yugoslavia. The total number dead and homeless have yet to be determined. In addition to these. we need to be reminded of anotherthe genocide of Armenians by the Ottoman Turks. which occurred between 1915 and 1923. Although this persecution claimed the lives of 1.5 million people and resulted In the forced deportation of 500.000 people. too few of us are even aware of its occurrence. The Genocide Convention entered Into force January 12. 1951. It was ratified by the United States on February 23. 1989.
