On this day in 1915. Armenian intellectuals. clergy and leaders ware rounded up and taken to their deaths. What was to follow was the ethnic cleansing of the native homeland of the Armenian people. Over a period of 8 years. 1.5 million Armenians were murdered and another 500.000 were deported. Before World War I. over 2 million Armenians lived in the Ottoman Empire. By 1923. the entire population of Anatolia and Western Armenia had been killed or deported. This was the first genocide of the 20th century. and. tragically. it was not the last. Prior to the invasion of Poland.
