Before Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World. the Indigenous tribes of Ohlone and Miwok Inhabited the area known now as San Francisco. Taking advantage of this unique natural harbor. these tribes flourished from fishing In the plentiful bay. When the land was finally taken over by the white new immigrants. the Presidio almost immediately became a strate ric military post. For over 220 years. the Presidio is the oldest continually operated military post. commanded first by Spain In 1776. then Mexico and finally the United States in 1846. The Presidio has played a supporting role in almost every single major military conflict the United States has ever engaged in. starting with the SpanishAmerican War to the Civil War.
