Jews fled by the tens of thousands. often entire families at once. They sought refuge in Western Europe. the U.S.. Central and South America. and even China. It is believed that as many as 90.000 Jews emigrated from Germany to the U.S. during this period in history. and many more would have come to our fair land had the U.S. been more willing to accept them. Unfortunately. we were not. Our countrys unwillingness to accept these Jewish refugees took a most tragic turn in May 1939. for it was at this time that the S.S. St. Louis. a German passenger ship. left Germany for Cuba.
