Session #104 · 1995–97

Speech #1040192406

Mr. Chairman. I thank the gentleman for yielding me the time. Mr. Chairman. I rise today in support of this amendment which will ensure a steady supply of labor for one of the most important sectors of our economy. The Issue before us today is quite simple: The illegal immigration provisions in the underlying bill could create a shortage of labor in the agricultural sector of our economy. This must not be allowed to happen and the gentleman from Californias amendment is. in my view. a reasonable attempt to ensure the continued survival of laborintensive agriculture. Mr. Chairman. a series of Joint hearings held late last year made it clear that agriculture had legitimate concerns which had not yet been addressed.
