Chairman. let me say that I would agree with the remarks of the gentleman from Texas in opposing this particular amendment. We currently have in existing law prohibitions. civil penalties. criminal penalties as well. jail terms that would be served by someone who was in the country without documentation. We also have under current law provisions that would cause the deportation and exclusion of an individual from this country for many years. Under this bill that we have before us. the penalty is increased even more as the gentleman from Texas mentioned. up to 10 years. you would be banned from being able to come into this country if you are caught without documents.
