Session #104 · 1995–97

Speech #1040166131

Europe today is not free of war and bloodshed and instability. We need to look no further than the war that has raged in the Balkans for the past 3 years. Others have spoken about it. and sometimes we forget these statistics: 250.000 people have lost their lives in that conflict. and more than 2 million people have been displaced or are refugees. This war has the potential to spill over into the rest of Europe. The history which I Just touched on has taught that maintaining a free. democratic and peaceful Europe is very much in our interests. in our security interests. and deployment of the NATO force in which the United States provides onethirdnot onehalf. not twothirds. but onethirdof the troops will help ensure the type of Europe we want: A Europe that is free. that is Democratic. and that is peaceful.
