Session #104 · 1995–97

Speech #1040148314

Mr. President. I have stood before my good colleagues so many times over the last 15 years seeking their support for reform of the immigration laws of our country. Today I do so once again. and this time the proposed change is fundamental. The bill I am introducing today is the product of many years. It would reform the law relating to legal immigrationto reduce the level and to revise the criteria of selection. Many of the proposals are consistent with recommendations of the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform and its very able Chairwoman. that remarkable and impressive woman. former Congresswoman Barbara Jordan. She and a bipartisan group of people put together some very important recommendations for us. The members of the Commission were appointed by the Speaker. by the Republicans. by the Democrats. by the majority leader. the minority leader.
