Session #104 · 1995–97

Speech #1040115834

This bill does more than just raise awareness of the shocking human rights violations occurring today in Turkishoccupied northern Cyprus. It also calls on the President to use the influence of the United States to work to bring these abuses to an end. Among the means to be used are bringing the issue before the U.N. Human Rights Commission and the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. addressing the issue in the State Departments annual human rights report. and creating a humanitarian assistance program out of existing foreign assistance funds to directly assist the enclaved in northern Cyprus. Mr. President. the measures called for in this bill are. frankly. the least we can do.
