Many small farmers in Mexico are deeply concerned about President Salinas agricultural policies and about the NAFTA agreement. They oppose both because they believe that the end result of both policies will be that large numbers of small farmers In Mexico will be driven off of the land. and into the cities as a source of cheap labor. They believe. as I do. that this will not only cause intense suffering for the farmers of Mexico but will result in Increased Illegal Immigration Into the United States as displaced Mexicans are forced to leave their country in order to survive economically. I believe that many Members of Congress believe that the NAFTA is wildly popular in Mexico. This is not true.
