Session #103 · 1993–95

Speech #1030085899

I speak also in memory of my father. My father was a newspaperman. and for part of my fathers life he was an editorial page writer. I want to tell you. my dad. who was a Jewish immigrant. who fled Communist Russia. would have been outraged by this piece of trash. because my father. unlike this newspaper. understood the real honor of living in a representative democracy. And the real honor of living in a representative democracy is to respect the rights and dignity of people and not to engage in this kind of vicious ex post facto redbaiting. the very thing that I had thought we moved beyond long ago. I apologize to Jocelyn Burdick and the Burdick family on behalf of this newspaper.
