Session #103 · 1993–95

Speech #1030080779

In an unprecedented display. Mexican authorities secured an agreement with the Castro regime for the return of the eight freedom seekers. Once returned to Mexico. the fate of the Cubans was still unsure when the United States did not immediately issue visas. While the issuance of the visas was being negotiated. the Cubans feared they would be stranded in Mexico. apart from their families and unable to reach the United States. Finally however. the United States Government recognized the plight of these Cubans caught in a political limbo and issued visas for all eight asylum seekers who were then transported to Miami. I was overjoyed to be among those lucky enough to greet these eight Cuban heroes upon their arrival in the United States. I celebrate the heart and spirit of these eight Cubans who risked their lives and their familys lives in order for the chance to be free.
