My amendment would make an exception for those Iraqi soldiers who assisted the coalition war effort following their capture or defection or otherwise. It is a very simple screening process. I say that because I find it unconscionable that an Iraqi combatant soldier would be admitted into this country under refugee status and given certain privileges and benefits and. indeed. a job. at the time there are many. many veterans of Operation Desert StormU.S. soldiers. airmen. marines. and sailors--who cannot or have not thus far been able to get comparable benefits. I find that inconsistent and unconscionable. I am pleased that this amendment is accepted on both sides of the aisle.
