Session #103 · 1993–95

Speech #1030079292

I know there is a reaction on the part of many people that a national ID card smacks of a police state. But many free countries have them. and what threatens us today in the world of computers and other invasions of privacy is not a national ID card but a number of other things. And. as Mr. Kuttner points out. It would protect people who are questioned by the Immigration and Naturalization Service at the present time. sometimes with less than the kind of sensitivity there should be. I also believe a national ID card would be of great help to HispanicAmericans and others who speak with broken English. whose mother tongue is not English. At this point.
