I am pleased to inform my colleagues that the necessity of an official common language has been recognized long before today. In 1983. only 10 years ago. our late former colleague. U.S. Senator S.I. Hayakawa of California. a multilingual immigrant himself. officially launched the common language of government movement when he founded U.S. English. A national. nonpartisan. nonprofit. citizens action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of a common language in America. U.S. English is one of the fastest growing interest groups in the Nation. with a current membership of more than 500.000 nationwide. In the 10 years of U.S.
