Mr. President. nearly every schoolchild in this country learns that America is a nation of immigrants. For centuries. people from every corner of the world. from all racial and ethnic groups. from every religion. and with vastly different economic backgroundshave come to our Nations shores seeking a better life. Some have found the life they sought. Others have devoted their lives to building better lives for their children. And. yes. there have been some notable failures. including the failure of slavery. During my nearly 33 years in Congress. I have received many requests for help from people who want to come to America.
