Session #103 · 1993–95

Speech #1030070017

I hope this meeting takes place to open what is obviously a muchneeded dialog between the magazine and the ArabAmerican community. The New Yorker cover is just one example of an increasing trend of media bias since the World Trade Center bombing. Recently. the Washington Post reprinted a cartoon from the Palm Beach Post titled "Lets Play Wheres Abu." The cartoon continues. "in the crowd of immigrants below. the terrorist Abu Ben Fotwa El Fadwa El Fatweh is carrying a huge bomb strapped to his waist. Can you find Abu?" Cartoons such as these are anything but funny to ArabAmericans. New York Transit policeman Mahamoud Tamer became the target of repeated slurs and humiliating jokes by his colleagues.
