LithuanianAmericans in Chicago will join Lithuania and the world to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the first nonstop transatlantic flight from the United States to Lithuania by LithuanianAmericans Stephen Darius and Stanley GIrenas. Stephen Darius was born in Rubiskes. Lithuania. oh January 8. 1896. He settled in Chicago as a boy. graduated from Harrison High School. and attended Lane Junior College. Darius served in the United States Army anJ the Lithuanian Army and Military Aviation. Stanley Girenas was born in Vytogala. Lithuania. on October 4. 1893. He emigrated to the United States in 1910 and settled in Chicago. After serving in the U.S. Army. he became a flying instructor.
