Session #103 · 1993–95

Speech #1030055974

We are an open society. And we want to be an open society. We want to be open to legal immigrants. but I want to tell my colleagues. and particularly the members of the Judiciary Committee. that if we do no take some of the actions that the INS has been crying for these many years now. if we dont give them the legal tools and resources to reduce the numbers of people who are coming in here illegally or by devious and fraudulent abuse of our processes. some coming with ill Intent in their hearts. if we do not take some steps to begin to shut the door on abuses of political asylum. then we are going to have terrorist events in this country that will shake the foundations of our constituencies. And some of our Members will wonder why it is that we have not acted before this crisis. They will wonder why it is that the Judiciary Committee has set on these reform issues year after year.
