A preexisting tower located on the fiela is 65feet tall. and the parks visitors center has a 48foottall control tower. Most recently. Floyd Bennett was used by the New York City Police Department and the Coast Guard to deploy search and rescue helicopters when the freighter Golden Venture went aground off the Rockaways and dozens of illegal immigrants attempted to swim ashore. It is a shame when two Federal agencies cannot work together to address a serious public issue such as the placement of this FAA radar. The public has been caught powerless between these agencies. and has had to organize strong protests to elected officials to make its opposition heard.
