We must maintain our commitment to reconciliation and sustainable growth and development in that region. The United States has pledged significant assistance over the long term to Nicaragua and El Salvador as part of the national reconciliation which those countries are undergoing. Support for the human. economic. and environmental recovery of the Central Ainerican nations is in our national interest. It will help to stabilize the region. facilitate more trade. and stem illegal immigration. Failure to support longterm recovery in the region is courting the demise of democratic initiatives in the region and increases the potential that Central America will fall back into renewed crisis and civil unrest.
