While alien smugglers have increasingly relied on boats in transporting smuggled aliens. they continue to send their human cargo by air as well. Earlier this year I joined with Senator SIMPSON and others in introducing the Port of Entry Inspections Improvement Act of 1993. which is designed to curb abuse of our asylum system. Smuggling organizations are exploiting serious holes in our immigration system. and I believe that legislation is an important step in plugging these holes. The ability of organized crime to line its pockets with billions of dollars from alien smuggling should be of grave concern to us all. However.
