I want to thank the gentleman from New York . my friend. for holding this special order. Mr. Speaker. I rise today to pay tribute to a great American. Cesar Chavez. Chavez personified the very best in the American tradition. He displayed an unwavering commitment to improving the conditions of farmworkers. Chavez led a crusade on behalf of migrant workers that empowered hundreds of thousands of people. He brought attention to the plight of migrant workers in a way that deepened and expanded the civil rights movement. His efforts in voter registration forever changed the face of politics in the West. His nonviolent protests improved conditions in the lives of thousands of workers.
