Mr. Speaker. Im sure all of us were deeply saddened by the news of the death of Cesar Chavez last Friday. His death is a profound loss not only to the Hispanic community but to all of Americas working men and women. The civil rights movement has lost one of its true leaders and heroes. As the first successful organizer of farmworkers. Chavez showed Californias Hispanic and Filipino migrant community how to collectively battle for dignity. respect. and decent wages. And his impact was felt by working people everywhere. Cesar personally suffered in his battle for human rights. His many fasts drew attention to the misery of farmworkers.
