Session #103 · 1993–95

Speech #1030027567

Mr. Speaker. between the years 1915 and 1918. thousands of Armenians were uprooted and deported from Turkish Armenia where they died of starvation. disease. and massacres. This tragic event. known as the Armenian genocide. will forever mark the memories of all Armenians and their children. On May 28. 1918. Armenia declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire. In doing so. they were victorious in their struggle against a hostile government and began to work to overcome the effects of the deplorable genocide of 1915 through 1918. Their independence was shortlived however. and in 1921 the Soviet Red Army swept into Armenia and crushed the nationalist government.
