Latvians. Lithuanians. and Estonians will not soon forget this great tragedy in their lives. despite their recently declared independence. The deportations serve as a symbol to the Baltic people that they can not take their freedom for granted and that independence and human rights are to be cherished and ardently protected. While the Baltic States have finally freed themselves from the grip of Soviet rule. they still have a hard road to travel. The current economic challenges which they face are formidable and intricate. As I have in the past. I once again call upon the United States to support the economic reforms and advances pursued by these new States.
