Speaker. today I am introducing legislation requiring aliens who have been convicted of a felony and sentenced to probation or who have been released on parole to register with the Attorney General. Unfortunately. the number of criminal aliens continues to exceed our ability to detain and deport them. Onequarter of the Nations Federal prisoners are aliens. The vast majority of these aliens. upon release from prison. are arrested again. Many criminal aliens who should be deported are not. We need to know how many criminal aliens we have in our country. and we need to know where they are so we can deport them. as Federal law demands. This legislation is a part of what I believe should be Congress continuing effort to crack down on criminal aliens.
