In 1982. Miss Loren was the recipient of the NAFs Lifetime Achievement Award for the Performing Arts. Earlier this year. after the United Nations asked the awardwinning Italian actress to serve as Goodwill Ambassador for its High Commissioner for Refugees. the actress visted Somalia. "I know from my experience as a child in wartom Italy of the special plight of refugees and the displaced." she said upon her return. But I was not prepared for the depth of feeling that came pouring from my heart as I held a crying. starving Somali baby in my arms while visiting the devastated town of Baidoa. Nothing prepared me for this moment. which has haunted me ever since.
