Speech #1030014152

Peckham. was an attorney and a legendary figure among JapaneseAmericans in my hometown of San Jose. During World War II. when we were forced from our homes on the west coast and into internment camps along with 120.000 other Americans of Japanese anccstry. many lost the homes. farms. and businesses they had struggled to build. Those of us in San Jose. however. truly had a guardian angel in J.B. Peckham. Immigrants from Asia were prohibited from owning property at the time. so they turned to Mr. Peckham. He held their businesses. farms. and homes in trust until their oldest nativeborn children reached the age of 21 and could assume ownership.
