Failure to restore President Aristide to power. therefore. could mean that literally tens of thousands of Haitians will launch their boats within the next 120 days. Coast Guard ships be damned. Hundreds. maybe thousands of men. women. and children. will drown before reaching the promised land that America represents. The depressing reality is that this would relieve pressure on the current de facto regime while presenting the United States with yet another refugee crisis. If we are to avoid this possible calamity. the United States must accelerate its efforts. Our goals are clear: Restore President Aristides government as soon as possible.
