A 1797 map shows that Stanford. besides its first residential dwellings. could boast of a Methodist church. a Baptist meeting house. a doctor. three stores. two taverns. three stills. and a dozen mills. The sawmills especially were kept busy clearing the forests for materials to construct the New Englandstyle clapboard houses that are still common in Stanford. In the last century. when railroads were a more dominant mode of transportation. many refugees from New York City came to Stanford to escape the heat. making the town an important summer estate center. Some of those early boarding houses are still around. Farming is still an important part of the Stanford economy. but many residents now commute to a nearby International Business Machines plant and other important businesses.
