I applaud President Clintons recent move on the airlifts and the airdrops and hope that that will provide some relief. We then traveled to Syria where we met with Foreign Minister Farouk Shara in a very useful discussion. We were pleased to hear that the SyrIans do not consider the deportee issue one which is linked to the peace process. Foreign Minister Shara expressed concern that there had to be a solution of the issue of some 400 people deported from Israel but he did not say that that was indispensable to moving ahead with the peace process. Wu talked about the issue of the Golan Heights. and that is obviously a matter which is going to have to be worked out between the parties. But. to the extent that the United States can be helpful. it is obviously desirable.
