Mr. Speaker. today I am introducing the Criminal Alien Deportation and Exclusion Amendments of 1993. This legislation allows INS to deport criminal aliens when theyre convicted at the trial court level. instead of waiting until the alien has served their entire sentence. The bill costs nothing. streamlines the system. protects against the release of hardened criminals. and preserves the aliens due process rights under the law. This bill also saves State and Federal governments the millions of dollars it costs to feed. clothe. and house deportable criminal aliens. most of which are convicted on drug charges. Since 1 of every 4 inmates in the Federal prison system is an alien. this bill will also dramatically reduce overcrowding in our Nations prisons and jails. I urge all my colleagues to join me in taking this logical. nononsense step to deport criminal aliens. reduce prison overcrowding. and save millions of State and Federal dollars.
