My wife and I were in Savannah a number of years ago. we went tu Juliette Lows house. They sell a reproduction of the 1913 Girl Scout Manual. and when you road the ground rules for life written for girls in 1913. it is a very profound document. First of all. it is entitled "What Every Girl Can Do For Her Country." and in that sense it is a clearly patriotic. proAmerican national view. proAmerican concern. trying to teach every young girl. and this. by the way. was in one of our peak periods of immigration when the effort to assimilate and bring everyone together as Americans was particularly important. Second. it had two rules which I remember reading in 1981 that were just stunning. The first was. and this was pre equal rights amendment. this was pre what we think of in the modern age as womens liberation. and the first one was this. according to the 1913 Girl Scout Manual. that every girl should learn two trades so that if one dies. she can earn a living at the other.
