Session #103 · 1993–95

Speech #1030001793

Despite worldwide pledges that the atrocities of the holocaust or the Armenian genocide will stand alone and never be repeated. the people of BosniaHercegovina now share a tragic kinship with the survivors of this centurys darkest chapters. The facts are staggering. Wanton killing. rape. violent abuse in detention centers. attacks on innocent Bosnians. torture of prisoners. and of course ethnic cleansing. which is the forced expulsion of civilians from their homelands. The violence has claimed the lives of more than 200.000 citizens. Ethnic cleansing has uprooted more than 1.6 million people. creating a refugee problem of biblical proportions. There appears to be no limit to the degree of violencethe senseless genocide--imposed by Serbia and Serbianbacked forces. Over the past month. the United Nations has worked diligently to seek a peace agreement among the warring factions.
